The Search skill spotlights small-scale inspections, undertaken in a brief time solely with your primary physical senses. This skill is used to intentionally detect things. The word “intentionally” is critical here — unlike Notice (which is a passive skill requiring no time to use), Search offers more control at the expense of a time investment. The Perception check is a full action, but pays off with all the benefits of active skill use.

This skill is common to assassins, who practice a variety of techniques for locating their hapless prey. It is also common among special operations troops, whose strategic attacks are legendarily precise.

Special Note: Unless you spend 1 full action actively using this skill’s Perception check, you must use the Notice/Awareness check when determining whether you detect someone or something.

Sample Knowledge: Common methods someone might use to review an area (including the quickest); frisking techniques; the seven hiding places that will defeat a strip search; how to toss a room without letting anyone know you were there; invisible inks through history; last week’s episode of CSI.

When someone actively tries to escape your detection, your Perception result opposes his Sneak/Hide result; otherwise, your Perception result opposes his Blend/Stealth result.

When an item is hidden in any 30-ft. × 30-ft. area you’re searching, your Perception result opposes the Sneak/Stash Item result generated when the item was concealed, as appropriate to the surrounding terrain.

When an item is hidden on the person of an adjacent character you’re “frisking,” your Perception result opposes the Sleight of Hand/Stash Item result generated when the item was concealed.

When you examine a disguised person or forged item, your Perception result opposes the Falsify/Disguise or Falsify/Forgery result generated when the disguise or forgery was created.

Refer to the skill description for the relevant opposing check to determine your Perception check modifier, error range, and the effects of standard success or failure.

Cooperative: No.

Retry: No.

Threat: You gain a keen sense of your surroundings. When making an Awareness or Perception check, your result cap increases by 5 and your error range decreases by 1 (minimum 1). This effect lasts until the end of the current scene, or until you fail an Awareness or Perception check (whichever comes first).

Critical Success: You’re a hawk, aware of everything around you. You keep your current Perception result for the next minute (without rolling).

Error: You’re distracted. Your Awareness and Perception result caps are decreased by 5 and your Awareness and Perception error ranges are increased by 1 until the end of the current scene, or until you succeed with an Awareness or Perception check (whichever comes first).

Critical Failure: You’ve oblivious. You may not attempt another Awareness or Perception check until the end of the current scene.
